Lima public transport: fares and city travel in 2026

Use the Metropolitano or Metro when their stops fit your journey. Check the service and direction before paying, and allow for the walk at each end. Ordinary bus fares need a route-specific check. Budget in soles, including any card purchase and extra ride. A city transport ticket does not cover the separate road journey to Paracas or a Ballestas boat trip.

A cheap city fare helps only when the route goes where you need it. Lima public transport includes several services with different stops and payment rules. Choose the route first, then check the fare. For a Ballestas trip, treat your ride across Lima and your coach to Paracas as separate parts of the day.

Choose the right part of your journey

Match the service to the destination before checking the fare.

City buses and Metro serve Lima routes. A coach to Paracas is a separate journey with its own terminal and ticket.

Match Lima public transport to your actual destination

Start with the full address, rather than a district name. A hotel in Miraflores and a coach terminal elsewhere in Lima may need quite different routes. Save the destination on your phone. Ask your accommodation to help identify the right stop if the address is hard to place.

Separate the choice into the main ride and the walk at each end. A rail line can look close on a map while leaving an awkward walk with bags. A bus may pass the right road but run in the wrong direction on the side where you are waiting. Check both before leaving.

The main choices are city buses, the Metropolitano bus system and Metro rail services. They are not interchangeable names for one service. Check the exact line or route, its payment method and its last useful stop. Do not assume a card bought for one system will work on another.

For a first visit, pick a route you can explain in a few clear steps. Note where you board, where you leave and how you reach the final door. If the plan needs several changes, compare a booked car for that leg. A lower fare may come with more walking and waiting.

Check the Metropolitano route and trunk fare

The Metropolitano is a city bus system, not the Metro railway. Its trunk service runs along a corridor with stations. Before entering, check which service calls at your destination. A bus using the same corridor may have a different stopping pattern, so its route name matters as much as the station.

An ATU notice dated 23 March 2026 gives the general trunk fare as S/3.20. That is a trunk journey fare, not a promise that every Lima bus costs that amount. Check the current posted price before travel, especially if you add a feeder service or change systems.

Use the station's official card and recharge process. Check the balance before joining the boarding queue. Keep enough value for the trip you intend to make, then plan the return separately. Do not assume that buying a card includes a journey or that a transfer is free.

The same ATU notice warns against using another person's reduced-fare card. A visitor should budget for the general fare unless the operator confirms a valid entitlement. Avoid buying access from someone offering to tap you through. Use the official sales or recharge point and ask staff when the rules are unclear.

Use Metro Line 1 when its stations fit

Metro Line 1 is a railway route through Lima. Ositran's Line 1 information identifies the route between Villa El Salvador and Bayovar, through Avenida Grau. Check the station list against your address. Being in Lima does not mean your hotel is close to this line.

The Line 1 operator's fare page lists the adult journey at S/1.50, with the card priced separately at S/5.00. Ositran also lists the adult fare at S/1.50. These figures describe Line 1, rather than every rail or bus service in Lima and Callao.

For your first ride, allow time to buy or recharge the correct card. Keep the card after travelling if you plan to use the line again. Check the platform direction before entering the train. The end station shown for that direction should match the way you need to go.

Look at the full route before deciding that rail is the cheapest useful choice. Count the ride to the station and any walk after it. If you need another service, check its fare as well. For operating hours or service notices, use the operator's current information close to departure rather than an old screenshot.

Ask about ordinary Lima bus fares before boarding

Ordinary city buses can be useful when a specific route serves your destination. Smaller buses and combis, a local name used for small passenger vans or minibuses, also appear in Lima travel advice. The vehicle's size does not tell you where it goes or what your own ride will cost.

Confirm the destination with the crew before you board. Show the actual address or a saved landmark, then ask whether the bus stops nearby. A route sign alone may not settle where you need to get off. If you cannot make the journey clear, ask your hotel to help you plan another option.

Ask for the fare for your destination and have small soles ready when cash payment is required. Do not treat a price from an old blog as a fixed citywide rate. Avoid handing over a large note without checking change. Keep your money secure while you deal with boarding and bags.

Stay aware of where you need to leave. Save the destination offline and follow your progress without holding your phone out beside an open window. Ask about the stop before you reach it, so you are not rushing to leave. If you miss it, get help with the next safe step rather than jumping off in traffic.

Budget for Lima fares in soles

Use soles for the transport budget, then convert the total only if you need it for your own accounts. A claim that a ride costs less than a US dollar can go out of date with exchange rates. It can also hide the price of a card or the need for a second fare.

For example, Line 1's published adult fare and card price are separate charges. Buying your first card costs more than taking another ride with a card you already own. The recharge balance is separate from the card itself. Check each amount at the official point of sale before paying.

Build a small budget for the actual route:

  • Access: the walk or paid ride from your hotel to the first stop.
  • Main service: the fare for your chosen bus or train.
  • Changes: any extra ticket or fare after leaving that system.
  • Return: the route and payment needed to get back.

For a group, work out the total for everyone before comparing a private car. Ask the operator how your group should use or buy cards rather than assuming one card suits every arrangement. Include luggage needs in that comparison. A cheap fare is useful, but it is only one part of the journey.

Plan the stop from Miraflores or Barranco

Check the nearest useful stop from your actual accommodation in Miraflores or Barranco. A district can cover more ground than a route sketch suggests. Ask reception to name the stop and show you the walking route. Save the return address as well, so you can explain it later.

For any city outing, make a short route note before leaving. It can be as simple as hotel, boarding stop, service name, exit stop and final walk. This is a journey sequence, not a geographic map. Add the direction or end station where that helps you recognise the right platform or bus.

Check the return while you still have time and a reliable connection. The stop on the way back may not be opposite the place where you arrived. A late finish also needs a fresh check of operating hours. Have another way home if the service you planned to use is no longer running.

Ask about access if stairs, long walks or crowded platforms pose a problem. Describe the help you need and confirm it for the specific station or service. Do the same with a pushchair or large case. A route that suits a day bag may be a poor choice with all your luggage.

Keep bags secure on Lima city journeys

Read the FCDO's current Peru safety advice before travelling. It warns about theft and transport risks. Keep valuables out of sight and your bags close. Avoid putting a passport or phone where it is easy to take while you are boarding or moving through a crowd.

Leave room in your plan to stop and check directions. It is easier to read a route note from a safe place than while stepping off a bus. Keep the next address available without a live data connection. Carry only what you can manage through the trip without leaving a bag unattended.

For a late arrival, heavy luggage or a route you cannot confirm, compare a licensed booked car. FCDO advises using reputable transport arrangements and warns against hailing taxis in the street. Check the vehicle and driver against the booking details. A person calling out your destination is not proof that they are your driver.

Do not promise yourself a fixed journey time based on a fare or a map. Delays can affect the walk, boarding queue and road leg. Build more room around a timed coach than around a flexible afternoon outing. Saving a small amount on a local ride is less useful if it causes a missed departure.

Separate Jorge Chavez airport and Paracas travel

An arrival at Jorge Chavez airport needs a specific onward plan. Do not assume that a city rail line or a hotel bus route provides your airport transfer. Check the current airport transport options and the exact terminal. Our Lima airport taxi guide explains pickup and payment checks for a booked car.

For a coach south, start with the terminal printed on your ticket. Lima does not mean one interchangeable boarding point. Confirm the street address with the operator, then plan how you will reach it. Tell a driver the full terminal name rather than asking for the nearest bus station.

The Lima-to-Paracas guide covers that separate road journey. A Metropolitano or Metro fare does not include it. The coach booking should show your travel date and destination, with the boarding requirements. Count time at the terminal as well as the ride there.

Keep the Ballestas boat booking separate too. Ask the supplier for its check-in time and meeting place in Paracas. An overnight there can remove the need for a tight same-morning road connection. It cannot guarantee a sailing in poor sea conditions. Plan each leg on its own terms before joining them into one itinerary.

Lima public transport questions

How much is public transport in Lima?

There is no single fare for every service. Line 1 lists an adult ride at S/1.50, while ATU lists the Metropolitano trunk fare at S/3.20. A card purchase or another service can add to the total. Confirm the current fare for your actual route before you board.

Can I pay for every Lima bus with one card?

Do not assume that one card covers every service. Check the card and recharge rules for the bus or railway you plan to use. Ask staff before buying a card for several journeys. Ordinary buses may have different payment arrangements, so confirm those with the crew before boarding.

Is Lima public transport useful for visitors?

It can be when the stops fit the journey and you can follow the route. Check the walk at each end and the direction of travel. For a late arrival or large bags, compare a booked car. Choose based on the whole trip, including any changes and waiting.

Does a city bus ticket take me to Paracas?

No. Plan the Lima city ride and the intercity coach as separate journeys. Your coach ticket needs a date and the correct terminal. Leave time to reach that terminal and complete boarding. A Ballestas boat ticket is another booking, with its own meeting place and check-in time in Paracas.

Should I budget for Lima buses in US dollars?

Use soles for the actual fares, then convert your total if that helps you budget. Exchange rates change, and a dollar estimate can hide a card purchase or extra ride. Check whether a quoted amount is for one person, one journey or the whole group before comparing options.

Verdict on Lima public transport before Paracas

Choose Lima public transport by the route you need, then check its fare and payment. Keep the Line 1 and Metropolitano figures tied to their own services. Include walks and any extra fare in your budget. For Paracas and the Ballestas Islands, leave time between the local ride, coach and boat arrangements.
